Ask a real musician: 5 classic male metal singers

An interesting ‘outsider’ opinion on 5 well known male metal singers. I concur with her assessment. Also, seeing as I’ve been hooked to the Iron Maiden album nowadays, it’s good to see Bruce Dickinson scoring very highly according to her. To an extent, it also helped me understand why and how some singers are able to command such presence.

I was listening to “The Art of Navigating by the Stars” in my music collection the other day, and I came to appreciate again how unique this band truly is. Sadly, they have split up now but if you like art rock, progressive rock and metal, you must listen to these guys. Listen to some tracks off their last album “Paramount” here on Grooveshark. It’s easy to label them as progressive metal, but that’s simplifying it. This description of their sound is very apt. When Alpha And Omega Collide is typical Sieges Even, multi layered structures that challenge your senses, making you wonder just what it is that binds the track together…something is but it can’t come any closer than naming it the indefinable Sieges Even “element”. No other band writes music like this. Indeed, no other band writes music like this. Love this album right now.

What do you get every 2-3 years? A new Overkill album! This one is called Ironbound (very nice cover there), and it’s killer stuff. If you haven’t been very pleased with their last couple of albums, this should set your mind at ease. Blitz hasn’t sounded this good in awhile, and the rest of the band is as energetic as ever.

After 25 years together, at this stage in our career, there’s honestly only three bands Dream Theater would consider opening for and Maiden is one of them. It is an absolute honor.
Mike Portnoy, on touring with Iron Maiden. These shows are going to kick ass. I’m honestly considering a trip just to see one of these shows.

Amorphis - “Course of Fate”

This track is from their new release Skyforger. If you have been following the band since Eclipse when Tomi Joutsen joined as their new vocalist, you won’t notice drastic changes to their sound. The maintains the same style that Eclipse ushered in. The band retains the strong guitar melodies, death growls and smooth keyboards but this time they manage to fit them in a ‘pop metal’ format. And that’s not to say that Amorphis have watered down their sound, but they have managed to blend mainstream elements into a heavy and melodic sound, resulting in an album that’s instantly appealing. The solo in this song is one example of that.

What’s wrong with these people?” I thought, referring to my friends who listened to that stuff. What the hell was going on for them that wasn’t going on for me? The answer: nothing at all, merely a matter of aesthetics. Metal is better than music. It can be a surrogate for every job you don’t get, every girl who ignores you— or it can just be the noise you put on when you’re bored. Even as a fledgling college music student, I could find stuff on Reign in Blood to show my teachers and say, “See, no matter what kind of stuff you tell me, I know there are guys doing it better, harder, faster.” Because of its power, metal fans tend to be diehard, as would I be had I discovered the next best thing to getting high and getting laid. I won’t claim to be a metal expert, but ever since that awakening, it’s always been music close to my heart in one way or another.
